Protecting your business in a heightened threat landscape

The retail sector is currently experiencing an increase in cyberattacks, impacting businesses globally.

Large retailers have faced significant disruption, including substantial revenue loss and disabled IT systems, with e-commerce functions being offline for weeks. These attacks can lead to increased costs and lost revenue.

To gain a deeper understanding of these threats and how to build a resilient defence, download our whitepaper below.

Considerations for strengthening your security posture

To address these challenges, retailers should consider immediate, short-term projects to assess their cybersecurity posture and enhance their defenses.

We can provide:

- Assessments: Pinpoint security risks and vulnerabilities to gauge your cybersecurity posture.

- Endpoint Assessment: Evaluate your endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools, offering configuration and remediation guidance.

- Incident Response Planning: Optimise your current plans, processes and tools for effective attack readiness.

- Breach Simulation: Test incident response plans through tabletop exercises, identifying areas for faster and more effective response.

- Threat Intelligence: Gain insights and tools to detect your confidential data on the dark web.

- Third-Party Risk: Assess the effectiveness of security policies, procedures, and tools within your supplier and partner ecosystem.

Verizon can help.

Our insights come from supporting customers, network monitoring, and visibility from owning one of the world's largest IP networks.

The evolving threat to retailers

Cyber attackers are using sophisticated methods, including multi-pronged and automated attacks, sometimes leveraging AI to impersonate genuine users. Verizon's 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) found that 53% of breaches involved system intrusion, with 75% of these being ransomware attacks that often compromise multi-factor authentication.

Ransomware attacks are also more advanced, threatening data encryption or public release. Financial gain remains the primary motivation, with tactics now involving both extortion and data exfiltration. The 2025 DBIR reported that 30% of analysed breaches involved a third party, a statistic that has doubled since the previous year's report.
